賴比瑞亞的總統大選於 2017 年 12 月 26 日進行，最終由二度參選的前世界足球先生 George Weah 當選。George Weah 曾效力法甲摩納哥、巴黎聖日耳曼以及英超卻爾西、曼城等隊伍，但最為人熟知的莫過於效力 AC 米蘭的時期，曾在 1995年為幫助 AC 米蘭拿下義甲冠軍並在該年當選世界足球先生，是目前唯一拿過該獎項的非洲球員，但由於賴比瑞亞的國家隊實力不足，所以 George Weah 也是唯一一位未曾參與過世界盃決賽圈的世界足球先生。

George Weah 曾為 AC 米蘭拿下兩屆義甲冠軍。

George Weah 在離開米蘭前曾說：「我的膚色是黑色，我的血液是紅色的，我的一生都屬於紅黑色。」雖然最終他因為狀態下滑而離開米蘭，但由此也可以看見他對於俱樂部的忠誠。本次是繼 2005 年之後二度參選，2005 年他雖然進入大選第二輪，但仍然敗給 Ellen Johnson Sirleaf，她也成為賴比瑞亞第一位女性總統。這次 George Weah 捲土重來終於成功成為第一位職業球員出身的總統，此舉也讓人想到巴拉圭傳奇球員 Chilavert，他也計畫在2023年參加巴拉圭總統大選，讓人期待這些在球場上叱咤風雲的球員會如何運用球場上的智慧與精神去挑戰政治領域。
